The festivals celebrated in Agartala symbolise the rich cultural extravaganza of our country. Id, Christmas, Buddha Jayanti and Ashokashtami are celebrated with equal fervour in the city.

Garia puja the traditional tribal festival celebrated in April symbolises the worship of mother earth and is spread over seven days. Singing and dancing is an integral part of this festival, as the tribals believe that celebrations will bring them prosperity for the whole year.

Come May, the Buddha temple of Venuban Vihar gets ready for Buddha Jayanti celebrations. The occasion is celebrated with much energy and excitement and is witnessed by Buddhists from all over the country.

Two other remarkable tribal festivals are the Kharchi puja and Ker puja. Kharchi puja is a weeklong festival celebrated to worship the fourteen Gods of the tribal kings. The fourteen Gods are Hara, Uma, Hari, Ma, Vani, Kumara, Ganapa, Bidhi, Kha, Abdi, Ganga, Sikhi, Kama and Himadri. Tribals and non-tribals assemble in the courtyard of the temple of the fourteen Gods and sing songs to mark the occasion.

Ker puja follows Kharchi puja. The festival is held within the limits of a land boundary specified in the State Government gazetteer. Ker is the guardian deity of Vastu Devata, and literally translated, Ker stands for a boundary or specified area.

Both Kharchi puja and Ker puja are celebrated in July.

Agartala is heavily influenced by Bengali culture, so it is no surprise that Durga Puja season, around the month of September-October, is the busiest time of the year. The festivities that go on for four days culminate on the night of Vijaya-Dashami when the deity is immersed in water and the city celebrates with a grand dinner.

In October-November the festival of lights, Diwali, brings with it renewed excitement in the heart of the city. A great fair to spread light and joy to the new year is organised at the end of Diwali.
