Guwahati is the trade hub of the Northeastern region. Besides being a major wholesale distribution centre, it is also a marketing and retail hub. The Guwahati Tea Auction Centre is among the largest such centres in the world. Guwahati also houses quite a few malls to add to the shopping experience in the city. Another major economic activity is manufacturing, with the most important industrial setup in the city being the IOCL petroleum refinery.

The city is the seat of the regional offices of numerous manufacturing and business organisations. The electronic and print media are also among the major businesses in the city. In the past two decades, real estate, finance, tourism, education, etc have also gained in strength.
