Jamshedpur is home to the sixth largest Iron and Steel company of the world. The modern Industrial city that it is, Jamshedpur has Iron and Steel, Truck Manufacturing, Tinplate production and Cement as the main industries, with scores of ancillary industries. Tata Steel, the largest Iron and Steel producing plant in India, is situated at the centre of the city. The plant covers a quarter of the city's land area.

Then there are Tata Motors, Tata Tinplate, Indian Steel and Wire Products (ISWP), TRF, Agrico, Tata Yodogawa Ltd, Praxair, British Oxygen Company (BOC), Lafarge Cement, A coal fired captive power station of Tata Power.

Many other Indian and foreign companies have a significant presence in the city. Small and medium enterprises are located in the Adityapur Industrial Estate.

The 24-hour running drinking water and electricity, and the quality of roads set Jamshedpur apart from the other centres of urban India. These facilities are maintained by Jamshedpur Utilities and Services Company Limited (JUSCO), a 100-per cent subsidiary of Tata Steel.

Active reforestation and tree planting activities help maintain air quality, making Jamshedpur one of the greenest cities of India.
