Ludhiana

Manchester of India

The largest city in Punjab, Ludhiana is one of North India's major industrial centres and is also sometimes referred to as the Manchester of India.

Founded during the Lodhi dynasty (from which it takes its name), Ludhiana lies on the old bank of the river Sutlej, which today flows a few kilometres South.

The city has several tourist attractions including the 500-year old Lodhi Fort constructed by Sikander Lodhi, the Maharaj Ranjit Singh War Museum, the shrine of Pir-i-Dastgir and Gurudwara Charan Kamal. Other places of interest are the Guru Nanak Bhavan and the Nehru Rose Garden. The famous Punjab Agricultural University is located here. The city is an important pilgrimage spot as it is the site of several Gurudwaras and Temples.
