Nashik

History and Heritage

Nashik has been a major centre since the days of the Saptavahana Dynasty. Later the Mughals named it Gulshanabad, the city of gardens. According to the local legends, fresh flowers used to go to Aurangzeb's palace from here! After the Mughals and the Peshwas came the British in 1818 who then proceeded to make it a municipality. Thereafter, Nashik proceeded to play a significant role in India's freedom movement by participating in Mahatma Gandhi's non-cooperation movement. Dr. B.R Ambedkar also fought a large part of his battle against untouchability here.
