Festivals and events

In the early months of spring, just a few days before Holi, the annual fair of Dang
Darbar (now popular as the Jamabandi Darbar) is held in Surat. Representing the
age-old tradition of the kings and the chieftains of the territory, the festivities
in the Darbar display the culture and tradition of the region. The Darbar also exhibits
the arts and crafts of the tribal people. What's more, merchants and traders from
all parts of the district converge to display their wares and make a quick buck.
The traditional dandiya and garba dances are performed to the tune of the ras. The
fair goes on for a few days, echoing the spirit of the people of this blessed land.
The kite-flying festival in Surat is held on the eve of Makar Sankranti in the month
of January. This festival attracts people who appreciate the art, from all corners
of the district. International participants come together from France, Malaysia,
Korea, Abu Dhabi, UK, China, Israel, et al. The kite flying starts at the crack
of dawn and continues till the fag end of the day. Special, illuminated kites, called
“tukkals”, are strung together, decorating the sky. The joy of life and the spirit
and enthusiasm of participants and onlookers alike, is there for all to see. All
major Indian festivals, such as Navratri, Diwali, Ganesh Chaturthi and Janmashtami,
are celebrated with much pomp and fanfare.
