A temple in the heart of the city with Lord Vishnu reclining on Anantha the serpent god indicates that Trivandrum was originally built as a temple town. History tells us that Raja Marthanda Varma built this temple. He is considered to be the founding father of Trivandrum. The town flourished under his rule.

Among the successive kings, Swati Thirunal who is also called the father of Carnatic music; and Raja Ravi Varma, a painter of great renown, have left their mark on the city. Their memory is preserved in the museum and the Kannakakunnu palace, both places of great tourist interest in the city.

Trivandrum rulers have always paid great attention to the education of women and have demonstrated immense religious tolerance. This has allowed for an abundance of temples, churches and mosques in the city. People of all faiths live together in harmony and festivals are celebrated by all communities with equal fervour.
