Living history
Located close to the ancient battlefield of Kalinga, Bhubaneshwar's
2500 year old heritage encompasses Ashoka's battles, ancient
Jain monasteries, Buddhist stupas, along with the living arts
and crafts of the local tribes. The capital of Orissa, Bhubaneshwar
enjoys a profound reputation as both a business city and a city
of links to the ancient gods.
Bhubaneshwar is a major centre in eastern
India, thanks to the region's mineral resources. Well-connected
by air, road and rail, Bhubaneshwar's main attraction lies
in its historical heritage and the numerous ancient temples,
some of which date back more than 1400 years. The city has
four main temples that are unique and fascinating: the Lingaraj
temple, the Mukhteshwar temple, the Rajarani temple and the
Parasurameshwar temples are famous for their sculptures, carvings
and architecture.
At Bhubaneshwar, visitors can shop for the
many crafts that Orissa is famous for the silver filigree
work called Tarakasi, the brass and bell metal work, Patta
paintings, patchwork textiles, etc.
