In one way or another, Delhi has been a kind of historical magnet, inviting rulers and emperors to place their mark on the land. Archaeological evidence suggests that here was the site of Indraprastha, which was the capital of the Pandavas. There are also traces of Ashokan influence dating from 2500 years ago.
More recently, in the last ten centuries or so, the Rajputs, Chauhans and Mughals have invaded and ruled Delhi. Qutab-ud-din was the first sultan of Delhi in 1206, to be followed by the Khalji, Tughlaq, Sayyid and Lodi dynasties.
The Mughals - Humayun, Akbar, Jahangir, Shah Jahan and Aurangzeb - contributed to the beauty of Delhi, before giving way to British rule. In 1911, the capital of British rule in India was shifted from Calcutta to Delhi.
