Endowed with rich historical ancestry, the Durg district is blessed with a plethora of indigenous art forms. Colourful ritualistic festivals like Dusshera at Bastar, Madai at Dantewada and Narainpur, Bhoramdeo, Raut Nacha, Chakradhar Samaroh and Rajim are celebrated with pomp and gaiety.
Durg has its own style of dance, cuisine and music. Pandwani, the musical narration of the epic Mahabharata, "Raut Nacha" and the Panthi and Soowa. Durg's most famous and popular folk plays are Chandaini-Gonda, Sonha-Bihan, Lorik-Chanda, Kari, Hareli, Gammatiha. Rahas is a modern folk drama of Durg. Many scheduled tribes like Gonds, Kanvers, Uraons, Korvas, Kols, Bhariyas, Binjhwars, Sawars, Dhanwars, Madiyas are based in Durg.
Ghotul is a better-known event in tribal life. Both boys and girls are allowed to spend a night out in the ghotul (kind of rest house), every week. Ghotuls are regarded as shrines, built by Lingo Pen, a Gond (a tribe) cult hero. Here, unmarried boys of the village learn songs and dance from their leader. Besides, every week, there is a dance carnival as well in which girls also participate. Moreover, it is treated like a pilgrimage.
Hareli is one of the common folk dance dramas of the Durg district. Based on mythological legends, religious events, historical facts and folklore, the beautiful dance drama of Hareli represents the rich cultural tapestry of the region. Dressed in colourful attire appropriate to their characters, the performers enact the roles with complete dedication, and enthusiasm, which is reflected in the flawless presentation of the folk dance drama. Hareli is reminiscent of Durg’s old glory and grandeur.
