Festivals and events
A good time to visit the city is around Makar Sankranti time in January. In the nearby town of Joydeb, the birthplace of Sanskrit poet Jaydev, the festival is celebrated by baul singers, who are famous for their spontaneous songs of philosophy and life. Thousands of visitors attend festivities at the Jogiraj Brahmananda Giri ashram in the nearby Garh jungle during Durga puja.
