History and heritage
Durgapur was a part of the Mauryan and Gupta empires before becoming part of the Mughal empire. What is most interesting is that excavations around the banks of the Damodar have unearthed artifacts that date back to 5000 BC. Historians are trying to determine whether these could be a part of the Indus valley civilisation. Interesting places to visit: The Bhabani Pathak's Tilla, which once had an intricate tunnel system linking it to the river and the Rahreswar Shib Mandir, which is an 800 year old temple. Shantiniketan's Vishwabharati University with its repository of Tagore's works and Vishnupur, home of terracotta sculpture, the Bankura horse and the Balucheri saree. The Durgapur steel plant is a must-see for a look at modern man's power of creation.
