Although known primarily for its temples and religious influences, Haridwar is slowly developing as a business and academic centre. BHEL or Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd has a base here and the University of Roorkee is close to the city.

Tourism is a huge revenue earner for the city and during the Kumbh mela, nearly 60-70 million people come together for a dip in the holy river. Its proximity to Delhi and Dehradun make it an attractive investment destination.
