Guwahati is the commercial capital of the NorthEastern state of Assam. Known as Pragjyotishpur (gateway to the NorthEast) once upon a time, Guwahati is also the biggest city of Assam. The name is derived from two Assamese words, "Guwa," meaning areca nut and "Haat," meaning market.
The city spreads across from the LGB International Airport in the West to Narengi in the East for about 45 km and from the Southern Bank of the Brahmaputra river to the foothills of the Shillong Plateau for about 15 km. The political capital of the State, Dispur, is housed in Guwahati. Being the Gateway to the seven other NorthEastern States, better known as the seven sisters, Guwahati is an important tourist base point, besides being an attraction in its own right.
