Ludhiana celebrates several festivals with enthusiasm. Lohri, the festival of fire, falls in the month of December-January. Every house lights a bonfire and offerings are made to the God of fire. For Ludhianvis, Lohri signals the coming of the end of winter.
Spring is welcomed by celebrating Basant and Holi. Basant falls in January-February when the fields are filled with yellow mustard flowers. Ludhianvis wear yellow clothes and sing and dance to welcome the change in the weather. Holi marks the coming of spring. The streets are abuzz with colour and celebrations.
The harvest is marked by the festival of Baisakhi, also the start of the Punjabi New Year. The onset of the monsoons is celebrated as Teej - the festival where mehndi is applied and girls swing on trees to welcome the rains.
Ludhianvis also celebrate several Gurupurabs, the festivals of the Sikh Gurus. The important days are the ones that mark the martyrdom of Guru Arjun Dev and Guru Teg Bahadur, and the birthdays of Guru Nanak and Guru Gobind Singh.
The district of Ludhiana encompasses several villages that celebrate events such as the Chappar Mela, The Chet Chaudash Mela, The Roshni Mela etc.
