The site of present day Ludhiana used to be a small village in the 15th century called Meer Hota. The Lodhis from Delhi ruled the region during 1451 - 1526 AD. History says that two Lodhi chiefs, Nihand Khan and Yusuf Khan, were sent to the area by Sikander Lodhi to establish peace and order.
Of the two, Yusuf Khan crossed the Sutlej to Jalandhar. Nihand Khan settled in Meer Hota and founded a town called Lodhi-ana (in essence, meaning Lodhi's town). The name later changed to Ludhiana.
In the early 19th century, the city was briefly ruled by Maharaj Ranjit Singh, before the British took it over and established a cantonment here.
