Mysore is a centre for several industries. Vikrant Tyres, Atlantic Mills, Larsen and Toubro, BEML and KSIC are located here. It is also a developing IT sector as the state administration is trying to persuade several companies to move or set up units in this city because of its proximity to Bangalore. Infosys and Wipro have already established bases in Mysore. Infosys has a large training center and Wipro has located a Global Service Management Centre in Mysore.

Mysore is also an education and research hub. The Mysore University, the Defence Food Research Laboratory, the Central Food Technological Research Institute, the Central Institute of Indian Languages, the Central Sericultural Research and Training Institute, etc are among many research centers based here.

The city is also a site for extensive cottage industries, sandalwood, incense, silk printing and stone carvings are all local industries here.
