Business in Pune
Pune is the epicentre for two of the country's largest businesses — automobiles and IT. It is home to some of the biggest auto manufacturers in India and in recent years has also developed as a strong IT centre. Companies such as Infosys and Wipro have set up sprawling campuses in the city. And nearly 6 per cent of the country's IT professionals are based in Pune. Almost every auto major in India and several from across the world has an office and production facilities in the Pimpri-Chinchwad region in Pune. Bajaj Auto, Tata Motors, Kinetic Engineering, Mercedes Benz India are some of the big names that are based out of the region. More recently IT parks such as the 500-acre industrial township in Hinjewadi and the software development centre at Magarpatta are being developed to attract a growing IT clientele to the city. These centres are being built on a global scale with an eye on international quality standards. Pune has also been recently included in a World Bank funded initiative for renewal of mega cities which could see its infrastructure improve even further. The above factors have pulled in almost every Indian IT major into Pune. Infosys, Wipro, Zensar Technologies, Cognizant, KPIT, Kanbay, Tata Technologies, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) - all have set up offices in the city. There are in all 109 companies registered with the Software Technology Park of India (STPI), Pune. Moreover there are 18 IT parks slated to come up within an 8-20km radius around Pune. This is already attracting investments from real estate majors, retail giants and IT companies that are looking for global scale and quality infrastructure for their operations. With an increasing number of companies setting up operations in Pune, the city is fast emerging as a vibrant and pulsating information technology centre for all of India.
