Queen of the Deccan
Pune, or Poona as it was once called, is an important cultural
and business centre situated in the western Indian state of
Maharashtra. Barely three hours or 170 kilometres away from
Mumbai, India's financial capital, Pune is well connected by
road, rail and air networks. Being close to Mumbai also gives
it easy access to an international airport and many other conveniences
of a metropolis.
Surrounded by the hills of the Deccan plateau,
Pune lies at the confluence of two rivers, the Mula and Mutha.
It's colonial past is alive in lovely old bungalows, tree-lined
avenues and a profusion of small gardens dotting the cityscape.
Its peaceful and verdant surroundings have earned it the sobriquet
of Queen of the Deccan and the burgeoning number of educational
institutions in the city has led many to call it the Oxford
of the East.
