As the capital city of Kerala, its literacy levels are among the highest in the country. Both men and women in the city are well educated and contribute significantly to a thriving export of manpower to the Gulf countries from India. The city has also always provided a thriving business environment. A rich reserve of natural resources has enabled rapid industrial development in and around Thiruvananthapuram. In recent years, the city has emerged as a centre for information technology (IT). A technopark was established in 1995 and almost all Indian IT majors have set up office here. The city is also diversifying into industries such as animation, movie production and biotechnology. Thiruvananthapuram also has a strong traditional industry in coir products and handlooms. Largely the domain of small and medium enterprises, these industries account for a significant share of the country's exports.
