Festivals and events of tourist interest
Onam: One of the most important festivals of the state, it signals the start of the harvest season. It is also meant to honour one of the legendary kings of the state, King Mahabali. According to Hindu mythology, Mahabali was a just and fair king who had become too powerful for the gods. To arrest his growing reach, they appealed to Vishnu, who helped curb his powers. But he also promised that the king would be honoured by the people long after his time. Onam is testimony to that promise. During Onam, every house is decorated with flowers and special prayers are offered in temples. Traditional food is cooked at home and served on plantain leaves. Vishu marks the Malayalam new year. It falls in the month of April along with the new year celebrations in many other states of India. It is an important festival of Kerala and celebrated with ritualistic gaiety and fervour. Lamps are lit and children are treated to delicacies and special gifts while everyone is decked out in traditional wear. Shree Padhmanabhaswamy temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. It is the main temple in the city which has Vishnu reclining on Anantha, the serpent. It is also the temple that gives the city its name.
Kovalam: One of the most beautiful beaches in the world, Kovalam lies 12 kilometres to the south of Thiruvananthapuram. Tourists are drawn to its clear waters and white sandy beaches that make for an unforgettable vacation. The Kanakakunnu Palace plays host to cultural meets and festivals in the city. It is a living example of the art and architecture that the town is known for. The palace and its sprawling grounds give tourists a glimpse into the town's rich heritage.
